The first women’s group at Big Bowl XII has last year’s finalists take on some familiar foes and new challenges. Here’s Group A!
The Coventry Cougars are, on paper, the big bully in this group. They’ve got bags of Big Bowl experience, as well as being accustomed to winning. Their most recent Opal Title was in many ways extremely comfortable. They made the final last year, losing a tight game to the Austrian Amazones. Can they go one step further this year?
The Mainz Elecorns and Walldorf Wanderers are the German entrants in Group A, and should have some familiarity with one another. Aside from the obvious link, they’ve both competed at Big Bowls and King Bowls. The Mainz Elecorns fell agonisingly short of the podium places in 2018, coming in 4th overall. The Wanderers came 11th last year, but a 4th place finish at King Bowl gives them some momentum coming into their home tournament.
The Salamanders are one of the elder stateswomen of the Russia flag scene, having won their first Russian Cup in 2015. Since then, they’ve had a competitive rivalry with the Red Foxes and have gone from strength to strength. Their passing attack, led by captain Vera Satyukova, should not be underestimated. They could punish any slackness against other defences, and should have enough talent to seriously challenge in this group.
The Reapers round out the group, but provide an unknown quantity. Generally, South American teams are a tricky one for any team on their day. We’re sure they’ll acquit themselves well in a wide-open group.
The strength of the Cougars has us feeling good about their chances of winning this group. They figure to be without Marta Mathews this year, who dominated last year at WR. Still, we take them to win the group.
The Elecorns should come next, but they’ll be pushed hard by the Salamanders. We’ve got the Reapers bottom for now, but could absolutely see them competing strongly. We’re just not sure what they’ll bring. The Wanderers will fill in at 4th.
