Premier Division North Defensive Player of the Year Update

The cross-conference set of games had defenders staring across the field at some unfamiliar opposition. Here’s how the top defenders in the Premier North are performing so far!

1. Brian McFerren, Clyde Comets 2.20 PPG

Brian “Bud” McFerren didn’t even feature in our last defensive player update, but finds himself top of the heap after some impressive displays. Bud’s two defensive TDs has kept his team in the hunt for survival, and he’ll need to be as prolific if the Comets are to survive. Overall, Bud has turned the ball over seven times in 10 games.

2. Aaron Drummond, Aberdeen Oilcats, 2.0 PPG

Aaron has been feasting on opposition QBs this year, with 10 interceptions already – most in the Premier North! He’s just behind Bud with 4 games left. We imagine he’ll add to his total, and have a chance of winning this category!

T-3. Gary Elliot, Aberdeen Oilcats, 1.8 PPG

Gary has seven interceptions of his own this year, as QBs tend to stay away from the GB Lion. His single defensive score is perhaps a little surprising, as at this point last season he had multiple. Still, Gary is in the hunt, and we wouldn’t put it past him to surge up the tail.

T-3. Stephen Elliot Aberdeen Oilcats, 1.8 PPG

Stephen has taken a slight step back, adding only two sacks to his previous total of 11. He’s still the only player with multiple safeties in the Premier North, but his lack of production in the past few weeks has hurt his chances of winning this award.

T-3. Matt Wilkinson, Manchester Crows, 1.8 PPG

Matching Gary’s output of seven interceptions and one pick six is Matt Wilkinson. The Crow has been a steady presence for the Manchester side this year, and hasn’t seen his performance dip, despite taking on the difficult HNC sides. Matt could strengthen his position and make a late push for this award when he returns to take on the MEC sides.

T-3. Mantas Ceckauskas Sheffield Giants, 1.8 PPG

Mantas is balling out on offence, but his defensive prowess has kept in the conversation for this award. He’s matched Bud’s two defensive scores, but has five interceptions in total.

Here’s the rest of our top 10!

T-7. William Humphries, Edinburgh Outlaws, 1.6 PPG
T-7. Julian Holburn-White, Glasgow Hornets, 1.6 PPG
T-7. Waqas Arshad, Glasgow Hornets, 1.6 PPG
T-7. Liam Fleming, Grangemouth Broncos, 1.6 PPG
T-7. David McInally, Manchester Titans, 1.6 PPG
