SWC North Game-day One Review

The SWC North is host to Britbowl hopefuls, the Birmingham Lions, while the Coventry Cougars Mixed, Coventry Panthers and Northants Titans White will all be looking to make a dent in the Lions’ title credentials. Here’s how the first day of action unfolded;

Coventry Cougars Mixed 38, Coventry Panthers 19

This game was highlighted by the confidence that Cougars Mixed showed on both sides of the ball, heading in from a successful pre-season run which carried over into this game. Cougars Mixed were able to control this game from the opening kick-off until the final whistle.

Looks like the Lion certainly does not sleep tonight. The Birmingham squad came into this game to make a statement. The game was played in high spirits and the Birmingham Lions are enforcing a strict “you drop it, you ride the pine pony”, but every QB knows that it is always the receiver’s fault. Tristan Varney had another dominating performance under centre, it’s what we’ve come to expect from the talented signal caller.

This was a back and forth affair in the first half before Cougars Mixed were able to pull away after Titans White failed to convert a number of chances in the second half. Although, there was 10 points in it, apparently it was a much closer game than indicated. This will be one to look out for later in the season, where Titans White will be looking for redemption.

In a rematch of their previous pre-season game where Titans White came out on top, the Panthers took control of the first half with a resounding 14-0 lead after Titans White struggled to move the chains against a fired up Panthers defence. After some motivational words from captains Matt Tibbles & Arden Shaw, Titans White came out of the blocks quickest in the second half and managed to rack up three scores in succession with the Cougars responded to tie the game with minimal time left on the clock for Titans White to work. 20 seconds to go and Panthers Defence stood strong as the game ended with a tie but Titans White were left thinking that they should have walked away with the win. This will be a match-up to watch when the two teams meet again.

These two teams met a few weeks ago at the NuOla Spring Shield competition and the Cougars came away with two wins against the former champions, but today would not swing in the Cougars Mixed team’s favour. Tristan Varney decided that he was going to throw shade at the pre-season haters and played a clinical game in which several of his trademark deep bombs were thrown for scores, and if it were not for the Cougars defence, he could have racked up even more points. Cougars also had a strong offensive performance and will be looking to improve on this when the two teams face again.

Birmingham Lions 35, Northants Titans White 0

Final game of the day saw the hot-streak of the Birmingham Lions face the dejected Titans White after their unfortunate draw. The Lions came out and scored on their first two drives and then the Titans White defence held firm but it wasn’t enough to thwart the Birmingham Lions from imposing their will and extending their win column to 3 and a spot at the top of the SWC North.
